How did we start selling clothing?

In our early trips to Jaipur, we were introduced to a new clothing wholesaler.  With no intention to branch out selling clothing we decided to visit this place in the hope we may find products other than clothing. We subsequently purchased some tablecloths, bedcovers and occasionally some clothing for ourselves. Every time we visited, we were looked after by a very helpful and charming young staff member. He welcomed us each time we visited the store.

On one trip, out of the blue we called him, and he very proudly told us, “Sir, I have just opened my own showroom – please come and visit me”.  We jumped into a taxi and found his place. The shelves were not very full, but he had a tailor cutting the patterns for the clothes, machinists stitching upstairs, workers ironing and folding. His brother was helping work with his block printers, his lovely new wife was helping in the showroom. Cute fabric collages, made by his young daughter, decorated his office. It turned out we were his first international customers which he regarded as very good luck. Since that day, he has patiently guided us to successfully sell a range of lovely casual light block printed relaxed-fit clothing which has been extremely popular with people living in the tropical climate of Malaysia and South-East Asia. We are now great friends and they have visited us often here in Malaysia.
